At a glance

The Head of Communications UK (HoC) is a member of the Country Executive Office team. The UK HoC has a hierarchical reporting to the Country Executive UK and a functional reporting line to the Group Corporate Communications team, based in the Netherlands.

The HOC will work strategically together with the Marketing & Communications team in Head Office, including the branding and internal marketing teams and will be responsible for both the translation and implementation of the Bank’s marketing and communications strategy in the UK. This will be undertaken in conjunction with all relevant stakeholders located in both the UK and Head Office

The Country Executive Office is responsible for all activities in the UK, ensuring alignment and compliance to all legal, regulatory and statutory obligations, with the aim of achieving the bank’s strategic goals across all 3 UK Branches.

The UK Communications function is responsible for all internal communication activities for the ABN AMRO UK franchise. The function is also responsible for marketing and external corporate communications. Working closely with the UK Country Executive Committee and the various marketing, brand, media and communication teams within Amsterdam, Head Office as well as with the ABF International Marketing team. The role holder will be responsible for developing and implementing ABN AMRO UK’s communications strategy both internally as well as externally in conjunction with stakeholders in London and the NL Head Office. UK Communications play an integral role in enhancing, reinforcing and communicating the ABN AMRO strategy and culture in the UK – with a primary focus on internal communications but also externally through media, partner and customer engagement. The team strives to be a high-performing, results-driven team with strong internal and external networks and relationships.

Your job

In this role, you will be responsible for both the external and internal communications, including marketing, of all UK business lines of ABN AMRO.

The purpose of the role is to deliver effective and efficient marketing and communications to our stakeholders and to ensure an aligned approach in the dissemination of the ‘One Bank’ central strategy. The HoC will be responsible for developing and executing a leadership, culture and engagement focused internal communications strategy. Strategy development will be done in collaboration with the UK Country Executive, the UK HR Director and the broader UK ExCo. The role will also include the responsibility for content marketing, campaigns and projects to raise brand awareness and promote the products and services of ABN AMRO in the UK using a targeted approach through a variety of media channels. The HoC will be responsible for developing and implementing ABN AMRO UK’s annual marketing strategy and communications in conjunction with all relevant stakeholders.

Below are the core activities of the role:

  • Responsible for developing and executing a leadership, culture and engagement focused internal communications strategy.
  • Align with appropriate stakeholders in the UK and Head office to understand the ‘One Bank’ strategy and translate this into content for internal and external use to promote and position ABN AMRO’s activities and business in the UK.
  • Responsible for coordinating and delivering all elements of internal communications including leadership communications, UK intranet, UK townhalls and key business updates.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to the UK CE, UK ExCo and UK businesses on any strategic, operational or change activities which require internal / external communication.
  • Assist Senior Leaders within ABN AMRO UK to grow their internal and external profile.
  • Responsible for raising the business profile with external and internal audiences, such as within the industry marketplace, through content marketing and PR in close cooperation with internal stakeholders.
  • Website and Social Media - Management of ABN AMRO’s existing content and publication on our internal and external website of updates along with Social Media (e.g. LinkedIn) to promote new business, business developments across relevant sectors, interesting articles, UK and bank-wide developments. This will also include analysis of statistics from website and social media accounts to optimize our positioning of content.
  • Support the business heads with the sourcing / production of timely and relevant raw / owned content for key audiences, by defining their target market strategies, initiating tactical campaigns, idea generation, building a route to market matrix adding analytics to create an annual overview of the most effective initiatives with a continuous improvement focus.
  • Support the production of external pitch books, sales support materials (leave behinds) and client communications or ad hoc projects to ensure the brand guidelines are respected and followed for attraction, nurturing, retention and advocacy.
  • In collaboration with the UK businesses and an external events agency, organise measurable client events and activities based on business requirements including trade shows, taking responsibility for the logistics and operational implementation as well as providing a social media presence during the event where applicable and where required ABN AMRO branded merchandise.
  • Develop data analytics for continuous assessment and improvement and tracking of progress; and
  • Ownership of the UK Branch marketing ‘Out of Pocket’ budget management in close cooperation with the Country Executive, with due attention to return on investment analytics.

  • Assess periodically the overall skill sets of the team and ensure that training and development needs are identified and acted upon via regular team and one to one meetings
  • Regularly reviewing Succession Management and Talent Development plans, providing employees development opportunities to support those plans
  • To carry out Human Resource Management tasks within the framework set for this purpose by ABN AMRO in order to ensure optimum allocation, motivation and knowledge of staff.

Your profile

  • Relevant Marketing/Communications degree and full-marketing mix experience with a proven track record of delivering successful marketing activity
  • In-depth and relevant experience in this field to include defining Marketing and communication strategy, planning and implementation
  • In depth knowledge of communication and marketing techniques and methods
  • An experienced marketing professional, able to see the bigger picture but also hit the ground running and roll up their sleeves to produce engaging content and campaigns to deliver excellent results
  • In depth knowledge of communication and marketing techniques and methods
  • Significant experience of arranging and publishing content as well as using social media including LinkedIn
  • Experience of using analytics packages and social media tools to produce usage reports with the ability to analyse and translate data into executive reports
  • Have excellent interpersonal and influencing skills, with an entrepreneurial spirit with the ability to work autonomously, maintaining good structure, monitoring timelines and maintain an overview
  • Have excellent stake holder management at all levels of the organisation, being able to adapt style to build mutual beneficial relationships
  • Be self-motivated, flexible and have a proactive attitude with the adaptability to positively deal with change
  • Have strong organisational skills including the ability to multi- task and manage competing priorities
  • Strong command of the English language and the ability to articulate requirements. Have exacting standards in respect to detail, written and oral communication skills and motivation to exceed expectation of the role
