Why is Hertz charging me? ›

Charges added during rental can also include additional products purchased by the renter at time of rent, including NeverLost GPS, SIRIUS XM Satellite Radio, PlatePass (for toll roads), Child Seats, Ski Racks, and other products. Fee for drivers in addition to the renter named in the contract.

The Hertz Corporation. In February 2024, DRA filed a class action lawsuit in the Northern District of California against national car rental company Hertz to end its systemic civil rights violations against people with disabilities who need hand controls to operate a rental car.

The Hertz credit card authorization amount can vary, but if you're booking with a credit card, we will place an authorization amount of up to $200, and $500 for debit cards (plus any projected charges) onto your card.

In December 2022, the company agreed to pay $168 million to settle 364 claims related to the company falsely reporting rental cars as stolen. These cases sometimes resulted in Hertz customers being arrested and even imprisoned.

Why does it look like I was charged twice? When you extend, we collect the funds held for the previous week and authorize for the next week. This may look like two charges in your account, but only the new authorization will affect your balance.

Upon collection of the vehicle, REGARDLESS OF THE LEVEL OF INSURANCE, the main driver will be required to leave a guarantee deposit. The amount will be blocked on the main driver's credit card and will be unblocked when returning the car.

Why am I being charged after my return date? If you encountered any tolls or received any fines during your rental you may see these charges even after you have returned your rental.

If the prepaid reservation is cancelled within 24 hours before the pickup time, a $200 fee will be assessed. If the customer does not cancel the reservation prior to the time of pick-up and the rental vehicle is not picked up on the rental date, the entire prepaid amount will be forfeited.

If you rent with a credit card, Hertz will release the hold on the deposit within 24 hours of the vehicle's return. Your bank can take up to 10 days to release the funds. Please contact your bank if your hold has not been returned to you. If you rent with a debit card, the hold amount depends on your bank's policy.
