Sunnier days are finally, officially, blessedly here—and it’s time to get a jump on the spring 2024 fashion trends that have been taking over our feeds. If your wardrobe is starting to feel a bit tired after months of gray skies, you’re in luck: A new season is bringing plenty of fresh inspiration from the spring runways along with it. Better yet, they’re all actually wearable, from demure ballet flats to sporty tenniscore separates.
Nostalgia ruled last year’s biggest trends, including the revival of early-2010s fashion to so-called stealth wealth, which revisited ’90s-style minimalism. And experts say this year’s defining spring and summer trends, like the return of boho style and a resurgence of cowboy-inspired pieces, follow the same arc—but with a little more playfulness this time around.
So what will we wear this year? Mirroring spring’s clear skies, bright blue and crisp white are trending for the months ahead. Preppy fashion is also enjoying a major moment, giving you the go-ahead to dress like a more stylish high-school athlete. On the accessories front, belts are getting wider and more sculptural, while sneakers are slimmer than ever; don’t toss those Adidas Sambas from last summer just yet. If you’re not afraid to embrace spring and summer’s more adventurous materials, sequins and sheer fabrics will be everywhere (often in the same pieces).
“I think if prices for luxury goods continue to remain as high as they currently are, we’ll see the ‘quiet luxury’ trend stick around for a bit longer,” says Emilia Petrarca, who writes the fashion newsletter Shop Rat. “It’s just too expensive to take risks on pieces that you might not like 5, 10 years down the line. Timeless pieces are perhaps a better investment.” Still, she doesn’t think we’re headed for a year of unexciting clothes: “People are interested in trying a timeless sort of elegance or opulence, not just a boring beige minimalism that’s perhaps safer.”
Ready to get a jump on the season’s best (and most wearable) trends before the rest of the world? Fresh from the catwalk, these are the spring 2024 fashion trends our fashion editors are most excited to wear right now.
1. Athletic prep
One of our favorite 2024 fashion trends for spring and summer is the return of the preppy aesthetic. This one is directly tied to Miu Miu’s string of hyper-popular runways, starting a few years ago with that micromini pleated skirt and culminating in this spring’s Gossip Girl–esque collection. Updated prep-school classics like polo shirts, track jackets, and button-down shirts walked down the runway this season with a new attitude. Meanwhile, Challengers (and Zendaya’s sporty red-carpet style) is inspiring a renewed interest in tenniscore. There’s never been a better time to dress like you belong to a country club.

2. Boho 3.0
Welcome back to the zeitgeist, fringe! While the word boho might send you on a stress-induced mental trip back to 2013, fear not: The aesthetic has been remixed for 2024, with new takes on crochet, fringe, and flowy tops that feel cooler than ever before. Boho-aligned brands like Chloé, Ulla Johnson, and Ralph Lauren leaned hard into the look for spring—and we only expect it to get more popular as summer fades into fall. Invest now and you’ll be set for the whole year.

3. Basics with a twist
Stealth wealth is still going strong, but it’s poised to change a little in the new year. With ’90s luminaries like Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy clearly on the mood board, simple (yet glamorous) outfits are all the rage right now. “I believe we will move into an ’80s, ’90s look somewhat adjacent to quiet luxury,” says Jenny Walton, a Vogue contributor and writer of the newsletter Jenny Sais Quoi. “Someone who dressed in a very simplistic and chic manner such as Bessette-Kennedy will continue to be a big inspiration. I also think that restraint will become more and more alluring.” Get a jump on minimalism with hardworking basics—each with just enough personality not to fade into the background—like draped tank tops, sharp blazers, high-waisted jeans, and relaxed loafers.

4. Little white dresses
Forget the LBD. This spring, labels like Tory Burch, Prada, and Tove (among many others) are going in the opposite direction. Whether you’re heading to a garden party or to co*cktails, these numbers are just as sweet as they are alluring—and they’ll only get more practical for the heat as spring blossoms into summer. We appreciate how easy they are to style; throw on simple jewelry and take your pick from ballet flats, walking sandals, slingback heels, and summer sneakers.

5. Westward bound
Call it the Cowboy Carter effect: Fashion is taking a big trip out West this season, and we’re following. Instead of doing full vaquera cosplay, though, it’s more about taking cues from the American West: cowboy-style stitching on jackets at Chloé, lacy frontier dresses at Dior, futuristic denim sets and cowboy boots at Ganni. Whether you respond more to Texas tuxedos or Western boots, it doesn’t hurt to work a little frontiersman flair into your wardrobe.

6. Slim sneakers
For the second summer in a row, expect chunky sneakers to take a back seat to their slimmer, sportier cousins. Paired with everything from runway-ready dresses to relaxed trousers, these trainers—often in bold colors like yellow and blue—lend a relaxed, lived-in vibe that feels especially cool this time of year. Go classic with Adidas Sambas or try something new with an up-and-coming brand like Alohas.

7. Sky blue
There are blue skies ahead, according to Bottega Veneta, Staud, and myriad other brands. (We’ll spare you the cerulean monologue jokes.) The hue is so easy to mix into your outfits this spring, whether you go for a monochromatic look in an azure dress and matching sunglasses or a pop of blue in the form of a cover-up shirt or a designer bag.

8. Sheer layering
If the many, many runway presentations featuring see-through clothing—among them, Dior, Chanel, Hermès, and Prada—are any indication, expect sheer to continue its reign on and off the red carpet. You don’t have to bare it all to give the trend a try; instead, pick up a sultry top, a dress or skirt with a sheer layer, or a bag that mimics the same effect.

9. Statement belts
Listen, we never thought we’d say this either, but hear us out: Statement belts are hot. After about a decade in fashion jail, they were rescued this season by everyone from Ferragamo to Tom Ford, proving that a fine look can become exceptional with the simple addition of an eye-catching accessory. Add one to a spring dress or a pair of wide-leg jeans the next time you’re dressing to impress.

10. Shimmer and shine
From Ralph Lauren’s Halston-esque lamé gowns to Kate Spade’s sequined separates, this season’s presentations went big on all things sparkly. Unleash your inner Studio 54 groupie by shimmering in paillettes, rhinestones, and metallics—or take a note from the styling at Gucci and 16Arlington and pair your most eye-catching pieces with plain jeans, leather pants, or tees.

11. Micro shorts
While we expect shorts to grow dramatically longer by the end of the year, one thing is clear: They’re very, very short right now. Tom Ford and Bally showed sexy short suits for spring; Victoria Beckham and Miu Miu went all-in on the no-pants trend; virtually every other brand landed somewhere in the middle. We’re happy to jump on the look, but with ever-so-slightly longer inseams. (Hey, real life isn’t a runway.)

12. Mary Jane flats
Ballet flats are still holding strong for spring and summer, but they’re evolving—and the hottest pairs are Mary Janes. Equal parts polished and cheeky, the straps add extra support and show off a bit more of your personality than plain pairs do. Mary Jane silhouettes are available in the trendiest materials and colors of the moment, including mesh flats, pops of red, and metallics like silver. Pull them out when your outfit needs just a little more spice.
